Five Things that are Shaping our World Today…

The tragedy in Uganda continues to unfold, 300 girls kidnapped basically before an en entire village.  Who could have predicted that in this day of modern technology and rapid communication that a huge airliner could disappear? Last week, a Pakistani woman was stoned to death by her family for marrying the man she loved. Just a few days ago, a young man commits the unthinkable by killing innocent victims just because he could.  As a backdrop to these major events we have Mr. Sterling and the billions he stands to gain if he is made to sell his basketball team.

I am not one to engage in al lot of fear mongering, or complaining, primarily because I think that there is more good in the world than bad and because I think people are more likely to help one another than to hurt them. Still, there are reasons to fear that maybe we are becoming to complacent, that maybe we have not progressed as much I we would like to think we have.  Racial relations are still tense in America, women are still suffering at the hands of their relatives in many countries and piracy still exists in the high seas.

What happened to the airliner is anyone guess, I included because one does have to accept the possibility that one man, or a group of men, planned the demise of the aircraft. Therefore, I included it in this piece because it is a major enigma of our time. The disappearance is either a terrible accident or the act of a very sick mind. Maybe we will not know the answer to this question in our life time.

My friends know me as an optimist, I always see the goodness in others, I believe in innocent until proven guilty and I certainly believe in second changes.  If I did not, my work as a defense attorney would be impossible. But even with all my optimism and high hopes, it is hard to comprehend how a woman could be stoned to death by her family because she married a man she loved, or how 300 girls could be kidnapped for personal gain….

The world is an enigma and mankind is enigmatic. Will see how these five things that are shaping our world today develop.  Lets watch how these topics unfold:

  1. A jetliner gone.
  2. Three hundred girls missing
  3. A young woman stoned to death.
  4. A billionaires prejudices
  5. A young man’s rampage.

Is that old adage, the more things change the more they stay the same true in these five cases?

I am Attorney Martin E. Regan Jr., and these are my personal thoughts….
