Hiring the Long Term Unemployed.

I like the President´s involvement on the issues that concern everyday Americans. He is the man at the helm and the one who can exert pressure when pressure is needed to solve a problem. Recently President Obama began to ask major corporations for their help in putting long-term unemployed American workers back to work. Last Friday, CEOs from companies like Apple, Wal-Mart, Visa and Boeing visited the White House to inform of their commitment to help the long term unemployed. According to the White House, more than 300 companies have agreed to participate in the program. The longer a person is out of the job market, the harder it is to find employment; companies are usually skittish about hiring a person that has been out of the job market long term. The President’s administration has been engaged with major corporations for a while now, trying to extract their commitments to participate in this important campaign to hire the long term unemployed. An important component of this campaign is also included protection for the unemployed against any hiring practices that might discriminate against long-term job-seekers. Like:  Elimination of candidate screening practices that disqualify applicants based on current employment status.  Ensuring that jobs ads do not discourage the long term unemployed from applying.

We applaud the President´s initiative. I think that anytime you can create an effective partnership between government and business everyone wins. The unemployed will benefit from a good paying job and the corporation will have a good employee appreciative of the opportunity. I wish the President and the White House success with this venture.
