ACLU Petitions to End Program Giving Surplus Military Equipment to Police Agencies
.
We have posted previously about the dangerous, in our view, militarization of our civilian police forces. Providing civilian law enforcement officers with dangerous military equipment is a green light to use paramilitary tactics upon civilians. It’s wrongheaded.
The “1033 program” is used to give free of charge, surplus US military equipment, such as Humvees, armored personnel carriers, and high powered weapons to local and state police. The program itself, is now under increased fire in the wake of heavily publicized Ferguson, Missouri, militarized police deployment in response to public outcry after the police shooting of Michael Brown.
Here’s a current development:
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has
launched a petition designed to “stop arming local and state law enforcement with military equipment” and “impose a moratorium on the 1033 program to temporarily halt equipment transfers and create transparency and safeguards within this program.”
