A Teenage Girl Who Posted Nude “Selfies” is Charged With Distributing Child Pornography

I have in the past addressed potential dangers connected with the use of social media.

A few days ago a 16 year old Virginia girl was arrested by police because she posted nude photos of herself on Twitter, she has been charged with a one count felony distribution of child pornography. The photos have been removed and the number of photos involved is not clear.

A school official was informed of the publicly available lewd photographs; both the mother and the teenager were informed of the situation.  Authorities have confiscated her telephone.

According to police, the young lady who admitted to posting said photos is now facing one count for possession, reproduction, distribution, solicitation, and facilitation of child pornography. It appears that the police department received an anonymous tip regarding photos posted by the young lady.  A spokesperson with the James City County Police said the teenager posted the nude photos to the social media account around January 30.

I have often suggested that parents need to monitor their children’s activities closely, in this case, social media postings. Young people often lack the maturity necessary to go beyond the immediate thrill involved in doing something as exhilarating as posting self portraits. Parents and educators need to remind young people that the internet is a far reaching medium and that you never know who is watching or tracking postings made by unsuspecting and naïve individuals. Parents: Please make sure that you check your children’s activates online regularly and that you insist on having your children´s passwords. Do it, it’s important.
