Iran Executes a Woman Despite. Her Crime? Killing a man Who Raped Her.
The world learned with supreme disappointment, news that on Saturday, October 25, Iran hanged 26 year old Reyhaneh Jabbar,
Jabbar, 26 years of age, she had been previously convicted of killing a man she said was trying to abuse her sexually. The hanging took place in a Teheran prison. Her mother, Shole Pakravan, told the BBC she had visited her daughter just before the execution.
Reyhaneh Jabbari was arrested in 2007 for the murder of Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, a former intelligence ministry worker.
International human rights activists had led a wide campaign to prevent the execution of Jabbari. For a while it looked like international campaigns on Facebook and Twitter had gained a temporally halt to the hanging. Unfortunately, the Iranian governments news agency Tasnim, announced the execution of Jabbari. The news agency stated that the execution had taken place because Jabbari´s had been unable to gain consent from the victim’s family for a reprieve and that her claim of self-defense had not been proven in court.
