Not All Juveniles Eligible for Parole.
Paul Purpura wrote a very informative article published by NOLA.com in the Tuesday edition concerning the very important issue of juveniles serving life sentences for crimes committed before they turned 18 is very is very well written.
Louisiana currently has approximately 230 people serving life in prison sentences from crimes committed before their 18th birthday. The Louisiana Supreme Court recently determined that these convicted prisoners will not benefit from the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that bans life in prison punishment for juveniles.
At the center of the argument was the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Miller vs. Alabama. The Court ruled that mandatory life in prison for juveniles is contrary to their 8th Amendment right which prohibits cruel and unusual punishment.
