Your Rights When Stopped By Police Are….

Fortunately, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has issued a handy checklist that anyone can carry with them. It’s called a “Bust Card” and it’s a great way to remind yourself of your rights when stopped by the police.

The Bust Card governs eight situations:

• A stop on the street for questioning by police
• A traffic stop
• If you are stopped and questioned about your immigration status
• If police or immigration enforcement agents come to your home
• If agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation come to your home
• If you are arrested
• If you are taken into custody for alleged violation of immigration laws
• If you feel your rights have been violated

Remember, you have the right to remain silent and to ask for a lawyer. Only you can make the decision to waive your right to silence and counsel.
