President Barack Obama has Ordered a Review of Current Deportation Policy
President Barack Obama has ordered a review of Current Deportation Policy. Those of us who wish for a change in our immigration laws, are watching with interest what the administration does with the tens of thousands of immigrants who are here in the U.S. illegally but who do not have serious criminal records. Apparently the administration is contemplating a new policy that could shield them from deportation. We think this is good news. ´
President Barack Obama has ordered a review of current immigration and deportation policy with an eye to reformation. If changes to current policy are implemented, removal of individuals who have little or no criminal record may not take place, even when said individuals may have committed repeated immigration violations; including re-entering the country illegally after a deportation, or when they have failed to comply with a deportation order.
The possible move, confirmed by two people with knowledge of the review, would fall short of the sweeping changes sought by activists.
We are hopeful that the administration can find a way to resolve the issue of immigration in our country. The program could open an expansion a two-year-old program that grants work permits to certain immigrants who were brought here illegally by their parents when they were children. The program is known as the “Dream Act,” and the children who are beneficiaries of the program are known as dreamers. If the expansion occurs, then other groups, such as the parents of any children born in the U.S., such a prospect is a welcome relief for many who have built lives here in the shadows of the law.
The former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has said that he welcomes the change in policy for immigrants without serious criminal records. Of course, Congress will have to take action if sweeping changes are to me made to the immigration laws. But small steps sometimes are necessary before large, full scale reform can take place.
The administration has said that it is premature to plan or speculate on how this reform would be applied if at all. We hope it will be instituted. Too many families hang on the balance.
Let´s hope that change is in the air and that they pride that many immigrant families feel in raising their children in this country of freedom will permit them to enjoy for themselves the bounty that is America!
