UN calls for Independent Investigation

No one can contest the tragedy of the crash of the Malaysian flight represents.

Yesterday 298 fathers, mothers and children were traveling in an airplane at 32,000 feet on their way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Little did they know each was enjoying the last moments of their lives.

The majority of the passengers were Dutch citizens.

Was it an accident?

Exactly what does that word mean in this context?

September 1, 1983, when the Soviets shot down a Korean airliner it was “an accident.”

July 3, 1988, when the US shot down an Iranian airliner it was “an accident.”

July 17th, 1996, when TWA Flight 800 crashed off New Jersey it was “terrorism” until an electrical defect in the fuel tanks was identified and it was declared “an accident.”

In 2001, Ukraine shot down a Russian airliner killing all 78 people on board. It was “an accident.”

Today the United Nations Security Counsel is holding an Emergency Session and an independent investigation is being called for by world leaders.

That hasn’t stopped Western new outlets parroting the accusations of the governments of Ukraine and the US. Both have declared that Ukrainian separatists and Russia are responsible for downing the aircraft.

U.S. intelligence authorities claim that it was a surface-to-air missile that brought down Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 as it flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. However they also say “ We can’t say who fired it.”

The embattled Ukraine government in Kiev is blaming the separatist pro-Russia rebels and the Russia government .

Once again in Kuala Lumpur relatives of victims are meeting with counselors at the international airport. In the Netherlands, flags were flying at half-staff across the country as residents mourned the victims.

I can recognized and empathize with the pain families are suffering. Somehow the world has to come to the realization that war and killing are never the answer.
Let us I look forward to the empaneling of an independent investigatory team and the results of their investigation.
In the meantime hope that this horrible moment in the Ukraine will translate into peace talks for the region and that the manifestations of war will subside and that peace will prevail.

I know and understand that many times “a rush to judgement” leads to false accusations based upon insufficient investigation.  We need to gather the facts and let the facts do the “finger pointing.”
