House Bill 797 – – Proposal to Ban Cellular Phone Use Shelved.
On Monday, March 24, State Rep. Mike Huval, R-Breaux Bridge, shelved his own bill — House Bill 797 – in the face of mounting opposition from Transportation Committee members. The bill would ban the use of hand-held cellular telephones while driving shelved.
Louis Fey, chairman of the state Property and Casualty Commission, said that House Bill 797 was an effort to hold down insurance rates because drivers are three times more likely to be in an accident while using a hand-held cell phone.
There were eight vehicular fatalities in 2012 directly related to use of cellular telephones while driving.
